APIP TALKS – WELCOME TENSAI IN THE STUDIO TO DISCUSS INNOVATIVE PROJECT IN THE PLASTIC INDUSTRY

APIP Welcomes Tensai Furniture in Studio to Discuss Innovative Project in the Plastics Industry

The APIP – Portuguese Association of the Plastics Industry, had the honor of welcoming, in its studio, the associated company Tensai Furniture, represented by Hugo Patrício, Head of Marketing Communications at Tensai Furniture and Tensai Industry. During the meeting, the innovative initiatives of Tensai in the scope of the BiFibRe project, of which the company is the leading co-promoter, were discussed.

BiFibRe Project: Revolutionizing the Plastics Industry

The BiFibRe project aims to develop biodegradable composites of PLA (polylactic acid) and corn fiber waste to enable the industrial injection molding of rigid parts that can be used as components in household appliances. This project is part of the Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda, which seeks to promote the transition of the plastics sector to an effective circular economy.

Sustainable Plastics: A Pioneering Initiative

The Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda, led by Logoplaste Innovation Lab in collaboration with APIP, has a global investment of around 39 million euros and will present results by December 2025. The project was approved by the Coordination Commission of the Agendas and is part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), receiving support to promote the Circular Economy of Plastics.

Tensai, through its plastics and business units, integrates this consortium that includes 39 companies and 10 non-business entities from the scientific and technological system. The initiative aims to mobilize the private sector, national authorities, universities, and citizens, contributing to the goals of the European Circular Economy.

Project Objectives and Benefits

The main objectives of SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS include:

• Introducing 21 innovative products to the market that add value to the Circular Economy of Plastics.
• Registering 36 new patents, highlighting technological and scientific advancements.
• Publishing scientific studies, sharing knowledge at national and international levels.
• Reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with production processes by 30%.

By December 2025, this agenda is expected to involve about 427 highly qualified human resources, promote more than 80 training actions, and create new jobs. The project proposes a total investment of €39,161,831.64, with a national contribution of €24,447,875.19.

Sustainability and Recycling at Tensai Furniture

Tensai Furniture demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and the circular economy through environmental policies and eco-friendly practices. The BiFibRe project is an example of this, aiming to develop biodegradable materials that replace petroleum-derived polymers.

The proof of concept for the new material will be the injection molding of an egg tray for refrigerators, currently produced with fossil-based polymers. The project will also explore the production of biodegradable disposable cutlery, promoting resource reuse and raw material circularity.

TENSAI FURNITURE at the SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS Consortium – Circular Economy of Plastics

SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS Consortium receives Recovery and Resilience Plan support to promote the Circular Economy of Plastics.

The project presented by the SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS Consortium, led by LOGOPLASTE INNOVATION LAB and APIP – ASSOCIAÇÃO PORTUGUESA DA INDÚSTRIA DOS PÁSTICOS, was approved by the Agenda Coordination Committee, with the objective of promoting the green transition from the Plastics Industry to the Circular Economy.

TENSAI FURNITURE thus joins this consortium, in which SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS was one of the first contracts signed under the Mobilizing Agendas for Business Innovation, the Recovery and Resilience Plan, in a public ceremony presided over by Prime Minister António Costa.

The SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS project aims to be the Mobilizing Agenda for Sustainable Plastics in Portugal, capable of leveraging the sector’s transition to a truly circular economy.

It arises from an APIP initiative, led by LOGOPLASTE INNOVATION LAB, and aims to mobilize the private sector, national authorities, universities and citizens, contributing to the objectives of the European Circular Economy. The initiative is based on three pillars:

• The reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions;
• Greater resource efficiency;
• Job creation

Given the complexity of the value chain of the Plastics Industry, which involves a very large number of Stakeholders (e.g. producers of plastic materials and raw materials, transformers, machinery and equipment manufacturers, brand-owners, retailers and distributors, waste management, among many others), it has become essential to promote the creation of an innovation ecosystem capable of involving all these economic agents, as well as consumers, in order to address the challenges that the Circular Economy presents.

The Consortium brings together 39 Companies and 10 Non-Business Entities from the Scientific and Technological System, aiming to cover all segments and subsectors of the Plastics Industry and respond to the main challenges faced by the agents of this new Extended Value Chain. Organizations were thus selected that, benefiting from technical, organizational and technological capacities and skills, allow them to respond to the ambitious goals and objectives of the sector’s transition to the Circular Economy, also contributing to a more dynamic, exporting and highly qualified Portugal.

The goals of SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS are:

• Introduce 21 innovative products to the market – which add value to the Circular Economy of plastics and consumers
• 36 new patents – registering technological and scientific advances
• Scientific publications – sharing knowledge nationally and internationally
• 30% reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases associated with the processes productive

It is expected that by December 2025, this Agenda will involve around 427 highly qualified human resources in the fields of science, engineering and technology, promote more than 80 training actions and create new jobs.

SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS proposes a global investment amount of €39,161,831.64 (thirty-nine million, one hundred and sixty-one thousand, eight hundred and thirty-one euros and sixty-four cents) and will receive a national contribution of 24,447,875 €.19 (twenty-four million, four hundred and forty-seven thousand, eight hundred and seventy-five euros and nineteen cents), and will be completed and with results achieved by December 31, 2025.
