A global stage for sustainable innovation

TENSAI took part in the Plastics Summit – Global Event 2025, held at FIL – Lisbon International Fair, one of the most important international gatherings dedicated to the sustainable future of the plastics industry.
The event brought together companies, experts, and R&D institutions from around the world to discuss sustainability, innovation, digital transformation, and the circular economy — all key themes driving the transformation of the sector.

Promoted by APIP and led by the Logoplaste Innovation Lab, the Plastics Summit 2025 served as a strategic meeting point to present the outcomes of the Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda, comprising 14 projects and 4 Work Packages focused on the transition toward a circular economy in Portugal.

SUSTAINABLE PLASTICS — PLASTIC SUMMIT 2025 – FIL

TENSAI’s participation in the Plastics Summit 2025

Represented by Hugo Patrício – Marketing 🎯, TENSAI presented the latest developments from the BiFiBre project, an innovative biocomposite developed under Work Package 4: Circularity through Alternative Raw Materials, part of the Sustainable Plastics Agenda.

During its presentation on the Sustainable Plastics Stage, TENSAI highlighted its active role in research and development of sustainable solutions, reinforcing its leadership in the refrigeration and industrial plastics sectors — both increasingly guided by circularity and technological innovation.

PLASTICS SUMMIT – GLOBAL EVENT 2025 – COVER

BiFiBre: circularity and innovation from waste

BiFiBre represents a new generation of biocomposites based on PLA (polylactic acid) and corn fibers — a by-product of the agri-food industry transformed into a value-added raw material.
This innovative approach demonstrates how organic waste can be reintegrated into industrial production, replacing fossil-based materials and significantly reducing environmental impact.

The project is the result of close collaboration between companies and R&D institutions, including:

• TENSAI Indústria ♻️
• University of Coimbra
• COPAM
• COMPONIT, S.L.
• Instituto Pedro Nunes

Together, these partners transform knowledge and research into scalable industrial solutions, accelerating the shift toward a greener and more efficient industry.

Work Package 4: Circularity through Alternative Raw Materials

Work Package 4 (WP4) focuses on demonstrating the industrial feasibility of circularity through alternative raw materials, developing solutions that combine technological innovation, positive environmental impact, and industrial competitiveness.

Strategic objectives of WP4

• Reduce carbon footprint by replacing fossil-based raw materials with biocomposites from renewable sources.
• Lower dependence on conventional plastics, promoting the use of biodegradable and sustainable polymers.
• Valorize agri-industrial residues, transforming them into high-value resources.
• Demonstrate the relevance, replicability, and industrial scalability of these new materials, proving their technical and economic viability.

TENSAI led the presentation of the WP4 progress, emphasizing the large-scale replication potential and the project’s contribution to the competitiveness of both Portuguese and European industry.

TENSAI’s commitment: sustainability as an industrial strategy

For TENSAI, sustainability is not just a pillar of environmental responsibility — it is a core business strategy for growth and differentiation.
By investing in collaborative projects and circular-based technologies, the company strengthens its position as a European reference in sustainable innovation within the industrial sector.

“We believe the future of industry depends on the ability to combine technology, collaboration, and environmental awareness.
The BiFiBre project is a tangible example of how we can turn waste into value and progress.”
— Hugo Patrício, Marketing – TENSAI

Sustainable Plastics: a Mobilizing Agenda for the future

The Sustainable Plastics Agenda aims to accelerate the transition to a truly circular economy, promoting:

• the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions,
• greater resource efficiency,
• the development of high-value products and processes, and
• the reinforcement of European technological sovereignty.

Co-financed by the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), this Agenda represents a structural change in Portugal’s industrial specialization profile, acting as a catalyst for sustainable growth and innovation.

APIP TALKS – WELCOME TENSAI IN THE STUDIO TO DISCUSS INNOVATIVE PROJECT IN THE PLASTIC INDUSTRY

APIP Welcomes Tensai Furniture in Studio to Discuss Innovative Project in the Plastics Industry

The APIP – Portuguese Association of the Plastics Industry, had the honor of welcoming, in its studio, the associated company Tensai Furniture, represented by Hugo Patrício, Head of Marketing Communications at Tensai Furniture and Tensai Industry. During the meeting, the innovative initiatives of Tensai in the scope of the BiFibRe project, of which the company is the leading co-promoter, were discussed.

BiFibRe Project: Revolutionizing the Plastics Industry

The BiFibRe project aims to develop biodegradable composites of PLA (polylactic acid) and corn fiber waste to enable the industrial injection molding of rigid parts that can be used as components in household appliances. This project is part of the Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda, which seeks to promote the transition of the plastics sector to an effective circular economy.

Sustainable Plastics: A Pioneering Initiative

The Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda, led by Logoplaste Innovation Lab in collaboration with APIP, has a global investment of around 39 million euros and will present results by December 2025. The project was approved by the Coordination Commission of the Agendas and is part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), receiving support to promote the Circular Economy of Plastics.

Tensai, through its plastics and business units, integrates this consortium that includes 39 companies and 10 non-business entities from the scientific and technological system. The initiative aims to mobilize the private sector, national authorities, universities, and citizens, contributing to the goals of the European Circular Economy.

WE DID IT! In LESS THAN 27 hours! Final product with NEW PANTONE COLOR 2021 and IML (IN MOULD LABEL plastic chair injection) ADVERTISING SOLUTION and excellent brand identification (ex: beer brands, coffee brands, etc…), meaning higher quality, IML longevity (IN MOULD LABEL) advertising, quick customization chair by chair.

IN SUM:

1 – short delivery time;

2 – quick response to customer requests;

3 – personalized advertising solutions in IML – chair injection with “In mould labelling”.

MORE:

Chair injection process by plastic injection together with the IML (in mould label) advertising solution (highly customizable). The highly controlled temperature process allows a higher level of quality of the final product. The “In mould labeling” process merges the IML film with the rest of the plastic, making the IML film an integral part of the piece.

OUR PROCESS explained STEP BY STEP:

• Plastic Chair Color Pigment Arrival;

• Mould preparation;

• IML – IN MOULD LABEL plastic chair injection arrival;

• Chair injection together with IML;

• Finished product with the new #illuminating and #ultimategray pantone colors 2021

In addition to the chair production with color customization to the new PANTONE 2021, we decided to raise the bar and produce our chair with an IML – “IN MOULD LABELLING” – advertising solution or, also possible, IMD (IN MOULD DECORATION).

CURIOSITY: The term “in mould labelling” derives from the manufacturing process in which a label is applied to a plastic! The label serves as the integral part of the final product, which is then delivered as pre-decorated item
